Kirkfield was the home town of railway pioneer Sir William Mackenzie. A memorial plaque was erected on the north side of Highway 48 in his honour. In addition to the plaque for Sir William, the Anglican cemetery just east of the town site contains a plaque for another railway pioneer, George Laidlaw.
